SatsAtlas

Bitcoin glossary

Satoshi (sat)

The smallest unit of bitcoin: 1/100,000,000 BTC — the unit SatsAtlas measures in.

A satoshi — sat for short — is the smallest unit of bitcoin recorded on the blockchain: one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin (0.00000001 BTC). It is named after Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. There is no smaller on-chain unit; everything Bitcoin does is ultimately accounting in sats.

Sats matter because whole bitcoins became awkward for everyday amounts — a coffee priced in BTC needs six decimal places, but in sats it is a clean integer. Pricing the world in sats is the entire premise of this site.
